Description: Interesting and early aquatint of the ‘Sheerness battery at the entrance of the River Medway’. The picture comes from Samuel Ireland’s ‘Picturesque Views of the River Medway’.

Deptford to Rochester via Blackheath by Emanuel Bowen  circa 1720 

Description: Original copperplate engraved strip map showing the road from Deptford to Rochester via Blackheath, Crayford, Dartford and Northfleet. The map was engraved by Emanuel Bowen with the notes by John Owen, published by Thomas Bowles.

A View of the Church of St Mary le Bow in Cheapside

Description: Early copper plate engraving of ‘A View of the Church of St Mary Le Bow in Cheapside, London’. The print is by John Bowles and was originally published around 1760 in a larger format. This picture dates from around 1790-1800.

Description: Fine map ‘Cruchley’s Environs of Brighton, including Lewes, Shoreham, Newhaven etc’, engraved for H Wallis, for a sketch of the Natural History of Brighton. The map has additions to 1858 so I would assume this was produced around this time.

Proposed cast iron bridge across the Thames by Thomas Telford and Mr Douglas 1803 (large & rare)

Description: Early copper plate engraving of ‘Mess’rs Telford and Douglass’s elevations of the two designs , for the portion of the bridge which would come between the fronts of the wharfs’. The plan was produced for the Report (1800) from the Select Committee upon the improvement the Port of London. 

The report was ordered by the House of Commons to be printed 28the July 1800 and to be reprinted 1803. Printed by Luke Hansard and Sons and engraved by James Basire.

Proposed iron bridge across the Thames by Thomas Telford and Mr Douglas 1803 (large & rare)

Description: Early copper plate engraving of ‘Mess’rs Telford and Douglass’s plans & elevations of the inclined planes which are to connect their bridge with the wharfs & adjoining streets’.  The plan was produced for the Report (1800) from the Select Committee upon the improvement the Port of London. 

The report was ordered by the House of Commons to be printed 28th July 1800 and to be reprinted 1803. Printed by Luke Hansard and Sons and engraved by James Basire.  

Age: 1803  Size of image (mm): 490 x 300 size of sheet 580 x 400

Condition: The plan is in very good condition apart from a very small hole just left of the roadway at the top. Sold as a loose engraving due to the size of the plate.

The West India Docks on the River Thames

Description: Stunning original aquatint of the West India Docks in London. Published in 1810 in Ackermann’s renowned work ‘The Microcosm of London’. Engraved and drawn by Charles Augustus Pugin and Thomas Rowlandson, the picture has original hand colouring.

Condition: The image has some discolouration to the borders and a brown line to all sides from a previous mount. However the picture is sold with an ivory mount ready for framing which will cover both the discolouration and the brown line. Original hand colouring.

Description: Early copper plate engraving of ‘Mess’rs Telford and Douglass’s general elevation of a cast iron bridge , proposed to be erected near St Saviour’s Church in the situation expressed in their general plan, also horizontal sections of the piers taken at several heights from the foundations up to the springing of the arches. likewise a plan of the roadway shewing the manner in which the inclined planes are proposed to be connected with the bridge’. The plan was produced for the Report (1800) from the Select Committee upon the improvement the Port of London.

Description: Early copper plate engraving of ‘Mess’rs Telford and Douglass’s design of a cast iron bridge of a single arch, proposed to be erected across the River Thames, from near St Saviour’s Church, and in line with the Royal Exchange as shewn in their general plan plate IX. Span of the arch 600 feet.The plan was produced for the Report (1800) from the Select Committee upon the improvement the Port of London.

London to Dover in Kent by John Ogilby 1675 

Description: Super original copperplate map by John Ogilby (1600-1676).

The road runs from Southwark in London, through Deptford, Crayford, Dartford, Northfleet, Chalk Street, Rochester, Sittingbourne, Bacton Street, Canterbury and on to Dover in Kent.

John Ogilby was an interesting character, born in Scotland, he was a dancer, theatre owner in Ireland, book dealer and finally a map maker. This map comes from his renowned work ‘Britannia’ published in 1675.

St James’s – The Mall London? Fred A Farrell

Description: Original etching by Frederick Arthur Farrell (1882-1935) of, I believe, St James’s or the Mall in London.

F A Farrell was Glasgow’s official First World War artist, a superb picture.
