The West India Docks on the River Thames

Description: Stunning original aquatint of the West India Docks in London. Published in 1810 in Ackermann’s renowned work ‘The Microcosm of London’. Engraved and drawn by Charles Augustus Pugin and Thomas Rowlandson, the picture has original hand colouring.

Condition: The image has some discolouration to the borders and a brown line to all sides from a previous mount. However the picture is sold with an ivory mount ready for framing which will cover both the discolouration and the brown line. Original hand colouring.

Upper Pool, River Thames

Description: Stunning original watercolour of the River Thames, probably just down river from Tower Bridge.

The picture is by the collected Scottish marine artist George Shaw. Born in Glasgow in 1929 his pictures, particularly of the Thames, are very sought after. A wonderful image of a bustling working river.

The Tower of London from the River Thames

Description: Superb original aquatint by Thomas Malton Jun (1748-1804) of the Tower of London from the River Thames. The picture probably comes from his renowned publication ‘A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster’ 1792 – 1801. Aquatints from this publication are quite rare and very sought after.

Description: Super early aquatint of Woolwich, south east London. Engraved by J C Stadler after J Farrington R.A. the picture was published by J & J Boydell, Shakespeare in Cheapside in 1795. Interesting view of the River Thames from Woolwich.

Prison ships on the River Thames

Description: Superb original lithograph from William Henry Pyne’s renowned work the ‘The Costume of Great Britain’ first published in 1804. The image is of prison ships; the accompanying sheet states they are stationed off the Tower of London. Pyne was one of the first engravers to use lithographic printing, drawing on stone. This image published by William Miller in 1805.

Barges on the River Thames?

Description: Superb original lithograph of barges loading hay. A frequent sight on the River Thames where their flat bottom made them ideal to navigate into the shallowest of  water. The picture comes from William Henry Pyne’s renowned work the ‘The Costume of Great Britain’ first published in 1804. 

Pyne was one of the first engravers to use lithographic printing, drawing on stone. This image published by William Miller in 1805.

The Working River Thames 

Description: Superb etching showing a scene on the working River Thames opposite the Tower of London. A wonderful view, probably set in the 1940s with steamers, sailing barges and tugs just up from Tower Bridge. There is no artist shown but an extremely well executed picture.

Description: Atmospheric original watercolour of an old trader moored at Woolwich, titled ‘Thames at Woolwich’. The picture is by the known artist Sydney Vale. Sydney Vale was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the prestigious Wapping Group of Artists from 1972 to 1991.
