Original watercolour by Pelham Jones 1955

Fine original watercolour by Pelham Jones, one of the ships maybe the Cutty Sark, not certain. The picture is painted on Windsor and Newton board but sadly has quite a bit of foxing. However Pelhan Jones is a sought after artist and his pictures normally sell in the £300-£500 range so probably well worth the effort of restoring.

There is a brown line around the picture from a previous mount, which will obviously remount out. Double click image for a more detailed view.  Size of painted area 340mm x 230mm.

Original drawing by John Worsley titled Hugh Bowden, Albert R.N 1952

Original drawing by John Worsley of Hugh Bowden? John Worsley was involved in making the famous dummy known as Albert R.N. in the German prisoner of war camp Marlag O near Bremen during the Second World War.

He was captured with a team of saboteurs on the island of Lussin Piccolo in the Gulf of Venice. Originally put into solitary confinement as the Germans assumed, because of his artists materials, that he was a British spy. Once back in the main camp he sketched portraits of Victoria Cross winners, Beatty, Cameron and Plaice as well as scenes from around the camp and in the escape tunnels.

The dummy ‘Albert RN’ was used to cover up the escape of Lieutenant Mewes. Albert R.N was hidden in the shower block, assembled and then carried out on parade between two other prisoners allowing Mewes to hide in the shower block and then make his escape.

Sixty one of Worsley’s paintings can be found in the Imperial War Museum with another twenty nine in the possession of the National Maritime Museum. He became President of the Royal Society of Marine Artists in 1983. Worsley was also well known as the artist for the Adventures of PC 49 published in the Eagle comic from 1951 onwards. Sadly he died in 2000.

She was converted to an armed merchant cruiser by the Admiralty in 1939 and eventually went to Spain in 1965 to be broken up.
