After trading for many years the time has finally come to hang up the frames and retire. Our warm thanks to all our loyal clients; your support over the ten years the site has been running has been much appreciated.

Sir Walter Raleigh 1739

Early copper engraved portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh titled ‘Sr Walter Ralegh’. The engraving was engraved by Jacobus Houbraken (1698-1780) and comes from Thomas Birch’s ‘The Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain’. Published by John and Paul Knapson in London in 1739. Quite a rare image.

The engraving is in very good condition apart from a small hole just to the left of the young child but the price more than reflects this slight imperfection. Double click image for a more detailed view. Size of image 360mm x 220mm.

S S Cordillera loading by Wilfred C Applebey

Sepia print from an original etching by Wilfred Crawford Applebey of the S S Cordillera Loading. The print has a printed signature and title. Interesting dock scene probably dating from the late 1930’s.

Steel engraving of the Port of London engraved by R Sands after W H Bartlett. The picture comes from ‘The Ports, Harbours, Watering Places and Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain published by W E Finden in 1842.

The picture, which has fine later hand colouring, has a light crease between the edge of the image and titles, otherwise in good condition. Double click image for a more detailed view. Size of image 175mm x 120mm.

Whitechapel Art Gallery poster 1949

Original poster from the Whitechapel Art Gallery advertising the ‘East End Story’. The exhibition and poster are from 1949; the top picture shows the opening of St Katherine’s Docks in 1828. An interesting and scarce poster which will look superb framed.

Fine copper engraving ‘The Desire one of Cavendish’s Fleet in a Dangerous Storm near the Streights of Maghellan’. Engraved by Pollard the picture was published by Alexander Hogg and dates from around 1770.
HMS Montagu off Lundy Island C1906 
 
 
Original photograph of the British battleship H.M.S. Montagu on the rocks off Lundy Island. The captain of the Montagu thought he was off Hartland Point; sadly he crashed into the rocks off Lundy Island in thick fog despite being warned by the crew of a pilot cutter of the imminent danger.. The picture is fairly contemporary with the incident, there is a label with the image from Boots Framers stating that it was framed in 1909. A scarce and interesting piece of naval history. 
 
The photograph has been laid on card and is close trimmed to the right hand side, none of the image missing. There is a slight loss of image on the stern of the ship, otherwise in good reasonable condition. Double click the image for a more detailed view. The picture, which has original hand colouring, has a brown line around the border from a previous mount, will matt out and some foxing and discolouration. There is also a small hole or thinning of the paper just above the tree to the right hand side, only visible when held up to the light. A scarce engraving. Scarce early copper plate engraving titled 'The East Syde (Side) of the Bass'. Engraved by John Slezer this engraving comes from his best known work 'Theatrum Scotiae which was published in 1693. This copy may be slightly later from around 1800.
 
John Slezer was a Dutch or German born engineer and artist who arrived in Scotland in 1669, he was later arrested and imprisoned in 1688 for his sympathies towards King James V11.
