Ship of the First Rate ant Anchor C1750 ( large)
 
Very rare folding copper plate engraving 'A Ship of War of the First Rate with Rigging etc at Anchor' by J Mynde circa 1750. J Mynde was a line engraver of portraits, ornithological subjects etc after his contempories. His other works included illustrations to Don Quixote and Icones Avium. This is a stunning picture with every bannister, transom, light, gangway, mast, ladder, cable, sail etc listed in the reference boxes.
 
The picture has some light staining and a crease to the right hand border, but otherwise in good condition. Folds as issued. Double click image for a more detailed view. Size of engraved area 430mm x 350mm.

Very rare astronomical chart 'Theorica Latitudinum'. This chart was purchased as a loose leaf from an American dealer who trades in rare books and early engravings and the following information is based on his research. From an edition of 'In Sphaeram Loannis de Sacro Bosco Commentarius' by Christophori Clavii, probably the 1581 edition published in Rome.
 
Christoph Clavius (1538-1612) was a German Jesuit astronomer and mathematician and the inventor of the Gregorian calendar.
 
The chart is printed on fine paper has a small hole on the right hand side and is creased, as you would expect from an engraving of this age. Size of sheet 140mm x 110mm.

Rare copper plate map of Cornwall by T Osbourne, published in 1748 in Osbourne's Geographia Magni Britannii or Correct Maps of all the counties of England Scotland and Wales. The inset shows the Scilly Islands featuring St Martin's, St Mary's and St Agne's.
 
The map is hand coloured and is a little discoloured with a very tiny loss of colour down the centre fold. Otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 170mm x 150mm.

Superb early copper plate map 'Plan of the Road and Harbour of Leghorn with the Adjacent Coast. Surveyed by order of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, by Thomas Young Officer in the Tuscan Navy'. Published in 1793 by William Faden in Charing Cross London.  William Faden was Geographer to His Majesty and the Prince of Wales. His work is of very high quality and much sought after. He was chosen to produce the very first Ordanance Survey, a map of Kent in 1801. The map shows the coast of Italy and details Livorno, the Fort of Antignano, Madona de Monte Nero, Stagno, St Pietro in Grado plus a number of important rivers.
 
The map, which has later hand colouring, is in very good condition. Size of engraved area 320mm x 220mm.

Full page engraving from the 1859 Illustrated London News 'Naval insruction on board H.M.S. Britannia; Portsmouth - Lessons in Gunnery'. H.M.S. Britannia was a 120 gun first rate ship launched in 1820 and became a training ship in 1859. She was broken up in 1869.
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, is a little grubby around the borders and has some minor creasing as do most ILN engravings. Size of engraved area 340mm x 230mm.

Rare copper plate map by, I believe, Thomas Kitchin from John Hinton's 'The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure' published around 1765. The map is a survey of the roads from London to Bristol with a branch from Banbury to Campden in Gloucestershire.
 
The map, which has later hand colouring, has a crease bottom right and some professional restoration to a tear on the right hand side. Unfortunately these maps are almost always torn in the bottom right hand corner from years of opening and closing. Size of engraved area; 360mm x 300mm.

The map, which has later hand colouring, has a crease bottom right,some professional restoration to a tear on the right hand side and a small hole down the right hand fold. Unfortunately these maps are almost always torn in the bottom right hand corner from years of opening and closing. Size of engraved area; 360mm x 300mm.

Steel engraving of 'The New Shot Mill near Waterloo Bridge', London. Engraved by John Hinchcliff from an original drawing by Thomas Shepherd the picture dates from around 1830. The mill was situated just South of Waterloo Bridge and was built for making the shot used in guns. The actual shot was made in the melting chamber at the top of the 120 foot tower. It was then dropped from the tower into the water below and by the time it reached the water had hardened and formed into a perfect ball of shot. On the site now stands the Hayward Gallery.  
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, is in very good condition. Size of engraved area 150mm x 90mm excluding titles.

Fine quality watercolour by the artist Anthony Flemming titled by a label on the reverse 'Foreshore, West Mersea'. Anthony Flemming is a listed artist and a member of the Wapping Group of Artists, he is also the son of the well known painter Rowland Hilder. Super image.
