The Monmouth C1770 

Early copper plate engraving 'The FOUDROYANT of 80 Guns Viz Lower Deck (brass) 42 Pounders; Upper Deck 24 Pounders; Quarter Deck, 12 Pounders & 880 Men Commanded by the Marquis du Quesne was taken on the 1st of March 1758 by the MONMOUTH of 64 Guns Viz Lower Deck 24 Pounders; Upper Deck 12 Pounders; Quarter Deck 6 Pounders & 480 Men with a Reinforcement from GIBRALTER, Commanded by ye late brave Capt Gardner'. Super image but some condition issues, see below. 
 

The picture, which has later hand colouring, is laid on card and is clos4e trimmed on all sides. There is also a small indentation to the left hand border. St Katherine's Dock 1826
 
Scarce original aquatint 'View of the proposed St Katherine's Dock's'. Super view from the River Thames of the docks which opened two years later in 1828. This picture was published in the Gent Magazine January 1826 and is quite rare. 
 
The picture has vertical two folds as issued and is in good condition. For a closer view double click the image. Size of engraved area 230mm x 155mm.

Stunning engraving 'A View of Greenwich Hospital taken from the River' dated 1823. Engraved by Millam the picture was published by Richard H Laurie in Fleet Street, London. Wonderful view of the hospital from the River Thames with the observatory just visible in the background.
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, has some light creasing and some tears to the border, well away from the image and easily matted out. There is also some light foxing and discolouration from a previous mount. However generally the picture is in good order and priced sensibly for such a scarce engraving. Very early Kent map showing the Isle of Thanet titled 'Mappa Thaneti Insule'. The map originates from Dr John Harris's 'History of Kent' published in 1719. Quite a primitive map featuring Margate, Reculver Birchington etc.

Very rare folding copper plate map of 'A Draught of the Goodwin Sands' off the Kent coast The map was produced around 1750, cartographer and engraver unknown. Super map showing the South Sand head, Bunt head and the Brakes. The map also shows part of the Isle of Thanet.
 
The map, which has later hand colouring, has a crease just below 'Gull Stream' but this appears to have been done during the printing process. Vertical folds as issued. Double click the image for a more detailed view. Size of engraved area 240mm x 205mm.

Engraved by Wise from an original illustration by Schnebbelie the picture comes from Robert Wilkinson's 'Londina Illustrata' which was published in 1819. The picture is dated October 11th 1813. A super picture showing many long forgotten wharves such as Hagens Wharf, Meritons Wharf, Maues Wharf, Scotts Wharf, Allens Wharf etc. Plan view from the River Thames into St Saviours Dock.

Rare copper plate engraving ' View of the Justitia Hulk with Convicts at Work, near Woolwich'. An interesting engraving dating from between 1780 and 1820 from the 'New Newgate Calendar or Malefactor's Register'. The Justitia was a 260-ton prison hulk that had been moored in the Thames at Woolwich when transportation to America ended following the American War of Independence. 
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, is quite grubby with a crease top left, however it is quite a rare engraving and in reasonable condition for its age. Double click image for a more detailed view. Sheet size 205mm x 110mm.

Prospect of Inverness, Scotland 1693.
 
Scarce early copper plate engraving titled 'Prospectus Civitatis Innerness- The Prospect of ye Town of Innerness'. the view shows the South side of St Andrews Inverness Scotland with the River Eden in the background. Engraved by John Slezer this engraving comes from his best known work 'Theatrum Scotiae which was published in 1693, a rare print.
 
John Slezer was a Dutch or German born engineer and artist who arrived in Scotland in 1669, he was later arrested and imprisoned in 1688 for his sympathies towards King James V11.
 
The picture has some light brown staining around the border from a previous matting but generally in good order for its age. Folds as issued. Size of engraved area 405mm x 260mm.

Signed in pencil by the artist Timothy O'Brien, the Captain of the Queen Elizabeth 2 Lawrence Portet, the Leader of the Red Arrows Richard Thomas and David Leney Captain of Concorde.

Harbour Scene by Henry George Walker c1930 
 
Original etching by Henry George Walker of a harbour scene, possibly Devon or Cornwall. Born in Birchfield Birmingham in 1876 H G Walker became an active etcher in 1921 when he exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society. His most successful etchings were his studies of the harbours of Tenby and Brixham. He died in 1932.

Original etching by Henry George Walker of a harbour scene, possibly Devon or Cornwall. Born in Birchfield Birmingham in 1876 H G Walker became an active etcher in 1921 when he exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society. His most successful etchings were his studies of the harbours of Tenby and Brixham. He died in 1932.

Superb lino-cut by the Polish artist Henryk Polubinski. The picture is titled 'Kanal' signed in pencil and dated 1965. I would assume the scene is somewhere in Poland. The artist's last exhibition was in Friedberg Germany in 1983. 
 
The picture is on very fine paper and in good condition. Size of engraved area 330mm x 250mm.

French Colonies C1880 
 
Super French engraved map showing four of their colonies. The top left image is of St Pierre et Miquelon a small group of islands in the North Atlantic off the coast of Canada (Newfoundland and Labrador). Top right is the Iles Marquises in French Polynesia, bottom left is Guyane in the Atlantic off the coast of South America and bottom right is Madagascar in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa. The map comes from the Atlas Illustre de la France (La France et ses Colonies) and was published in Paris around 1880. Produced by A Vuillemin the map was engraved by Isdore. 
 
The map is coloured and apart from being a little grubby around the borders, not affecting the image, is in good condition. Size of engraved area 225mm x 180mm.
