We hope our archives are of some use to those carrying out research projects or tracing family ancestry. Whilst are happy for the images to be used we would, because of potential copyright issues, ask to be informed before any item is reproduced.

Fine quality etching of 'The Port of London' by Claude H Rowbotham dating from around 1900. The picture is much larger than the usual Rowbotham etching which tend to be almost miniature. Super view of the Thames, Tower of London and Tower Bridge, very atmospheric. Signed in pencil by the artist.
 
The picture, which is printed in colour, is in very good condition. Size of engraved area 230mm x 150mm.

The picture, which has some original hand colouring, has a slight ridge at the bottom of the page but otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 200mm x 150mm.

Signed limited edition print 239/1950 titled 'Seconds to Spare'. The picture is taken from an original painting by Timothy O'Brien and shows the Cunard Queen Elizabeth 2. the Red Arrows and Concorde. Signed in pencil by the artist Timothy O'Brien, the Captain of the Queen Elizabeth 2 Lawrence Portet, the Leader of the Red Arrows Richard Thomas and David Leney Captain of Concorde. 
 
The picture is in excellent condition. Image size 400mm x 255mm.

Very rare Jesuit related copper plate map ' Carte des Deserts de La Basse Thebaide' by Porlier dated 1717. The map shows the deserts of Thebaide low around the monasteries of St Anthony (St Antoine) and St Paul Hermits, Cairo and the place where the Israelites probably left Egypt.  
 
The map, which has later hand colouring, has folds as issued and some creasing but generally for a map nearly 300 years old in reasonable condition. Size of engraved area 400mm x 230mm.

Scarce early copper plate map of 'The Shetland Isles drawn from an accurate survey by T Kitchin Geog'. Rare map published by
R Baldwyn in Pater Noster Row,London for the London Magazine of 1752. Nice harbour scene with fishing boats and nets.
 
The map, which has later colouring, has some offsetting of the text from the rear and is a little grubby with close trimmed borders, price does however reflect condition. Size of engraved area 190mm x 100mm.

The Racehorse & Carcass, Horatio Nelson C1780 
 
Copper plate engraving of 'The Racehorse and Carcass forcing through the ice, August 10th 1773'. HMS Carcass was one of the early ships Horatio Nelson served on. The Carcass and HMS Racehorse were sent on an Arctic expedition to the North Pole to find a passage through to India. The ships became trapped in the ice on the 30 July 1773 and had to wait till 8 August for the ice to break up.
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, has been dry mounted at sometime onto card. The picture has a couple of vertical creases and is a little frayed along the bottom edge but this does mount out. Price does reflect condition. Size of engraved area 240mm x 160mm.

Fine quality etching of a Thames sailing barge, a collier and a Gravesend Steam Packet. Etched and published by E W Cooke in his Shipping and Craft 1829. 
 
The etching, which has later hand colouring, has some minor marks and the remnants of old masking tape on the reverse, otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 195mm x 120mm.

The Pool of London by Henry George Walker C1925  
 
Super original etching of the Pool of London by George Henry Walker dating from around 1925. Born in Birchfield Birmingham in 1876 he became an active etcher in 1921 when he exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society. His most successful etchings were his studies of the harbours of Tenby and Brixham. He died in 1932.  
 
The picture is slightly discoloured and has two small brown stains just above the front mast of the far left hand ship, otherwise in good condition. Price does take the small stains into into account. Size of engaved area 280mm x 170mm.

Super original etching of the Pool of London by George Henry Walker dating from around 1925. Born in Birchfield Birmingham in 1876 he became an active etcher in 1921 when he exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society. Original watercolour by C H Palmer dating from around 1910. I'm afraid I cannot say what ship this is or provide any details about the artist, all I can say is it is a fine picture by a competent artist. 
 
The picture is laid on card and has some very light staining, mainly to the sky. Size of painted area 160mm x 110mm.

Original watercolour by C H Palmer dating from around 1910. I'm afraid I cannot say what ship this is or provide any details about the artist, all I can say is it is a fine picture by a competent artist.
Early copper plate map of Kent by Robert Morden C1695
 
Super early copper plate map of Kent published between 1695 and 1722 by Robert Morden. Robert Morden (1650-1703) was a bookseller and publisher but is better known for his maps issued in 1695 in Gibson's revised edition of Camden's Brittannia. The map extends into London as far as Greenwich and Deptford.  
 
The map, which has later colouring, has remnants of old tape to most edges, possibly from a previous mount. There are three issued folds, the centre having some strengthening tape to it and there is some very slight tears along the bottom fold lines. Otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 635mm x 345mm.

Early copper plate map of Lancashire by Blaeu 1648
 
Very early copper plate map of Lancashire 'Lancastria Palatinatus' By Jan Blaeu (1596 -1673) dating from 1648. Jan Blaeu was the son of the famous Dutch cartographer Willem Janzoon Blaeu and became established as one of the finest cartographers of the seventeenth century. Super county map with a fine title cartouche and family crests.  
 
The map, which has original hand colouring, has some issues, there is some light staining, some creasing just below the title cartouche and a small repaired hole just above the 'a' in the word 'Sea'. However it is still a rare map and priced nowhere near the £600-£800 asking price elsewhere online. Central fold as issued. Size of engraved area 510mm x 395mm.

Rare copper plate engraving 'The Disposition of the British Fleet under the command of Admiral Keppel the 8th day of April 1761 previous to the attack of Fort Andre on the Island of Belle Isle'. Super engraving with the ships at anchor published in the History of England around 1770.
 
 
The picture, which is hand coloured, has some grubby marks to the left hand border and the word 'previous' in the title has started to fade, otherwise in good condition. Size of engraved area 270mm x 150mm.

Bawley Bay, Gravesend by A N Blackman
 
Superb limited edition silk screen print, 35/80 of Bawley Bay, Gravesend in Kent by Anthony N Blackman from 1974. Gravesend based marine artist Anthony Blackman attended the Royal College of Art in London between 1954-57. He has exhibited widely in the UK and USA, his last exhibition was in 2009 at The Mall Galleries in London. The exhibition was held by The Royal Society of Marine Artists, it was their annual exhibition.
 
The picture has been laid on hardboard but is in very good condition. Size of sheet 750mm x 540mm.

Howland Great Wet Dock, Rotherhithe C1860
 
Very rare engraving of the 'Howland Great Wet Dock. In the Parish of Rotherhithe formerly belonging to Mrs Howland of Streatham'. The Great Wet Dock was the first wet dock to be built on the south side of the River Thames. The picture is probably a 1860's copy of a slightly earlier lithograph, scarce item. 
 
The picture is a little discoloured mainly to the right hand side and has some minor foxing but the picture will clean up very easily and is generally in good condition. Folds as issued. Size of engraved area 300mm x 220mm, including titles.

Very rare engraving of the 'Howland Great Wet Dock. In the Parish of Rotherhithe formerly belonging to Mrs Howland of Streatham'. The Great Wet Dock was the first wet dock to be built on the south side of the River Thames. The picture is probably a 1860's copy of a slightly earlier lithograph, scarce item.
5th Chart of the Coast of France 1793
 
Early copper plate map showing ' 5th Chart of the coast of France from Feecamp to Cape Barfleur' The map was published by W Faden in London in October 1793. The map shows the Normandy coastline from Barfleur through to Feecamp.
 
The map, which has later hand colouring, has a small paper loss just above the 'E' in Channel, this is not a hole in the paper just the loss of the top surface, otherwise in very good condition. Size of engraved area 250mm x 180mm.

Stunning artists proof limited edition 7/20 lithograph by Alex Packham of Ballast Quay Greenwich. The Tate Gallery has one of Alex Packham's pictures in its collection. The pub on the left is the Union Tavern, now the Cutty Sark Tavern, it changed its name in 1954 when the Cutty Sark first arrived in Greenwich. Super view of the quay and barges. A rare picture.
 
The picture has a few very tiny creases but generally it is in extremely good condition. Size of engraved area 530mm x 380mm.

The British fleet at the Battle of the Nile was under the command of Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson, the French fleet under Paul D'Brueys. The battle was fought in Aboukir Bay near Alexandria, Egypt between the 1st and 2nd of August 1798.
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, is in good condition. Size of engraved area 220mm x 170mm.

Thames Barges, early aquatint by William Miller 1805

Super early aquatint published by William Miller in 1805. The picture shows, I believe, barges working on the Thames. 'The pictures from this series are quite sought after and some fetch very high prices.

The picture has original hand colouring and apart from a brown line around it, from previously being framed, is in good condition. Size of engraved area; 290mm x 200mm.

Early map of Kent by Richard Blome C1680.
 
Very early copper plate map of Kent by Richard Blome dating from around 1680. The map has a table of Lathes and Hundreds in Kent and a scale of miles. Blome originally commenced work on the county atlas this came from in 1667 but it would appear that by 1671 he had abandoned his attempt to complete the work and the plates were passed to another publisher. However in 1681 the map plates
re-emerge in Blome's possession and were published as Speed's Maps Epitomiz'd.  
 
The map has quite early hand colouring and apart from some very minor staining to the outer border is in good condition. Size of engraved area 240mm x 180mm.

Donald Maxwell was the official artist to the Admiralty in the first world war and went on the exhibit 14 times at the Royal Academy. The picture measures 190mm x 150mm. 
 
The picture has had quite a bit of restoration but the price does reflect the condition.

Isle of Wight, Van der Keere 1646
 
Super little copper plate engraved map of the Isle of Wight by Pieter van der Keere dating from around 1646. These maps are commonly known as 'Miniature Speeds' and were published around 1646.
 
The map, which has quite early hand colouring, is more discoloured than the screen image and is quite grubby around the borders, not affecting the image. Superb early aquatint of Moscow, Russia by Robert Bowyer (1758-1834). The picture comes from his important work 'An illustrated record of important events in the annals of Europe'. The impression is on J Whatman watermarked paper and has original hand colouring.
 
There a a few light foxing marks and a very slight paper loss in the sky. This is not a hole just a thinning of the paper and only visible when held up to the light. Central fold as issued and generally in very good condition. Size of engraved area 520mm x 280mm

Rare folding copper plate map of London and Environs. The map goes from Colnebrook in the West to Gravesend in the East. Southerly it extends to Westerham in Kent and Hatfield in the North.

The map has original colour and apart from the borders being slightly grubby and a small hole at Upper Morden, only visible if held to the light (six boxes from the left and four boxes from the bottom), the map is in good condition. Size of engraved area 580mm x 490mm.

This chart was purchased as a loose leaf from an American dealer who trades in rare books and early engravings and the following information is based on his research. From an edition of 'In Sphaeram Loannis de Sacro Bosco Commentarius' by Christophori Clavii, probably the 1581 edition published in Rome.
 
Christoph Clavius (1538-1612) was a German Jesuit astronomer and mathematician and the inventor of the Gregorian calendar.

Christoph Clavius (1538-1612) was a German Jesuit astronomer and mathematician and the inventor of the Gregorian calendar.

The S.S. isle of Hastings was a cargo steamer of 1575 gross tons built by H.S Edwards & Sons in Newcastle in 1885. She was sunk in 1916 by the German submarine UC-26 on a voyage from Fray Bentos to London, she was carrying tinned meat. All crew were rescued. A super early photograph.
 
The photograph is stuck onto a promotional card and apart from some grubbiness to the card is generally in good order. Photograph size 150mm x 110mm.

Scarce early copper plate map of Naples and Sicily dating from around 1758 probably by Gibson/Bowen. The map is quite tiny and very detailed. 
 
The picture, which has some original outline colouring, has some very minor foxing but generally in good condition. Size of engraved area 90mm x 60mm (3.5 inches x 2.5 inches).

Westminster Bridge, Frank Harding C1900
 
Superb pencil signed etching of Westminster Bridge by listed artist Frank Harding. Very atmospheric scene of the River Thames in London with tugs, barges being rowed and small cargo boats, the Houses of Parliament (Palace of Westminster) can be seen in the background. The picture dates from around 1900.
 
The picture is in good condition. Size of engraved area 200mm x 170mm.

The map, which has later hand colouring, has a very small bump just below the 'O' in Hereford upper left hand side, otherwise in very good condition. Size of engraved area 270mm x 220mm.
