London to Pool (Poole) by John Ogilby 1675

Very early copper plate engraved map showing the road from London to Poole from John Ogilby’s Britannia Atlas of 1675. The map shows the journey through Dorset and Hampshire from Alresford  to Southampton via Winchester, Romsey, Ringwood, Lymington,  Christchurch, Milton and Chester.

John Ogilby (1600–1675) was a cartographer best known for publishing the first British road atlas. His printing works were opened in Whitefriars, London just after the 1666 Great Fire from where his renowned 1675 Britannia Atlas was produced. 

The map, which is hand coloured, is a little discoloured but otherwise in good condition. Double click image for a more detailed view.  Size of engraved area 450mm x 340mm.

Bromley & Blackwall by Edward Weller 1863

Original lithographic map titled ‘Suburbs of London, Sheet 3, of Bromley & Blackwall & C’ by Edward Weller. The map was published in the Weekly Dispatch Atlas around 1862/1863. An interesting item showing Bow Creek and the River Lea and the various docks along the River Thames. The docks include the East India, Import and Export, as well as the West India Basin and Reservoir. The map is shown mounted but because of the size it will be forwarded rolled in a tube. If you require it with the mount, UK postage will be £8.00.

The picture, which has later hand colouring, has some staining and a few tears to the right hand border. However it has been priced to allow for condition and is quite rare. Double click image for a more detailed view. Size of image 440mm x 305mm.

Wigtown, Scotland by Perrot 1823

Rare, small, map of Wigtown Kirkcudb, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland by Aristide Michael Perrot.  Engraved by M Migneret the map is dated 1823. I believe the map comes from G.B. Depping’s ‘Ou Description Historique et Topographique Du Royaume Uni de la Grande-Bretagne’.

This map, which has original outline colour, has some very light foxing, otherwise is good condition. Size of engraved area 120mm x 70mm.

The map is by William Barlow and dates from around 1770. Scarce London copper plate engraving 'A Map of the Parish of St Dunstan's Stepney als. Stebunheath Divided into Hamlets' dating from around 1755.  Super John Stow plan with a table of the names of the streets, courts and alleys. The plan goes to the Isle of Dogs and Blackwall in the east, Bethnal to the north, Limehouse to the south and Whitechapel in the west, also a fine view of the River Thames. 
 
The map is close trimmed to the sides but retains an adequate margin for mounting and framing. Otherwise, apart from some minor creasing it is in very good condition. Folds as issued. Double click image for a more detailed view. Size of engraved area 410mm x 285mm.

The map, which has original hand colouring, is on watermarked paper marked 'J Whatman, Turkey Mill 1828'. The map is a bit grubby and stained around the borders but almost all will matt out. Very early copper plate map of 'The County of Leicester' by Richard Blome dating from around 1680. Richard Blome originally commenced work on the county atlas this came from in 1667 but it would appear that by 1671 he had abandoned his attempt to complete the work and the plates were passed to another publisher. However in 1681 the map plates re-emerge in Blome's possession and were published as Speed's Maps Epitomiz'd.

Engraved by J Gibson the map comes from the Gent Magazine and dates from around 1775.
 
The map, which has later hand colouring, has a small repair to the top left hand corner and some slight damage to the top border adjacent to the word 'Head'. There is also a small tear in column V11, price does reflect condition. Folds issued. Size of engraved area 290mm x 180mm.

The map is by William Barlow and dates from around 1770. The map, mainly of Kent and the Isle of Thanet, shows Canterbury, Keston, Crayford, Maidstone, Otford, Lenham, Newenden, Chilham, Rochester, Sandwich, Higham, Oldberry, Faversham and Dover amongst others.

Engraved by Benjamin Cole the plan comes from William Maitland's part work ' History of London' published around 1755. The top picture is of St Luke's Hospital for lunatics in Upper Moorfields. The plan covers the Barbican, Cheapside and London Wall and also shows the Coat of Arms of John Blachford.  
 
The picture, which has later hand colouring, is laid on card, has some slight discolouration and is close trimmed to the left hand side. Otherwise in good condition, price does reflect the minor faults described. Size of engraved area 360mm x 250mm.
