The Tower by Thomas Malton

Description: Superb original aquatint by Thomas Malton Jun (1748-1804) of the Tower of London from the River Thames. The picture probably comes from his renowned publication ‘A Picturesque Tour Through the Cities of London and Westminster’ 1792 – 1801. Aquatints from this publication are quite rare and very sought after.  

Age: 1799  Size of image (mm): 305 x 215

Condition: The picture, which has original hand colouring, has some discolouration to the borders but generally in good condition. Sold with an ivory mount ready for framing.

The Working River Thames 

Description: Superb etching showing a scene on the working River Thames opposite the Tower of London. A wonderful view, probably set in the 1940s with steamers, sailing barges and tugs just up from Tower Bridge. There is no artist shown but an extremely well executed picture.   

Age: Circa 1990s but could be earlier  Size of image (mm): 235 x 235

Condition: The etching is in good condition. Sold with an ivory mount ready for framing.

Early aquatint of Woolwich 

Description: Super early aquatint of Woolwich, south east London. Engraved by J C Stadler after J Farrington R.A. the picture was published by J & J Boydell, Shakespeare in Cheapside in 1795. Interesting view of the River Thames from Woolwich.

Age: 1795  Size of image (mm): 300 x 200

Condition: The aquatint has a crease bottom left, away from the image and titles; there is also some discolouration to the outer borders which will mount out. Otherwise in good condition. Sold with an ivory mount ready for framing.

South View of Westminster Bridge

Description: Fine early copper plate engraving of ‘A South View of Westminster Bridge’. Engraved by Thomas Jefferys the picture dates from around 1745. Great view of the River Thames with what looks like the Royal Barge in the foreground.  

Age: Circa 1745  Size of image (mm): 200 x 95

Condition: The picture, which has later hand colouring, is close trimmed to the left hand side, still suitable for mounting though. Central fold as issued. Sold complete with an ivory mount ready for framing.

A Plan & Elevation of a New Bridge to be built at Black Fryars

Description: Interesting early copper plate engraving of a proposed bridge across the River Thames at Blackfriars. The picture was drawn and engraved for the London Magazine. 

Age: 1756  Size of image (mm): 320 x 160

Condition: The picture, which has later hand colouring, is in reasonable condition. Folds as issued.  Sold complete with an ivory mount ready for framing.

Design for bridge near Somerset Place

Description: Early original aquatint ‘Design for a bridge near Somerset Place by Thomas Sandby Esq R.A’. I believe this comes from Samuel Ireland’s ‘Picturesque Views on the River Thames’ and dates from around 1795-1800

Billingsgate on the River Thames

Description: Fine quality steel engraving of Billingsgate from the River Thames from Tombleson’s ‘Eighty Picturesque Views on the Thames and Medway’. Engraved by Carter after Calvert the image shows the fishing boats waiting to unload. Great image.

Age: Circa 1845  Size of image (mm): 150 x 100, excluding ornate border.
