'Shipping' by Edward William Charlton R.E. 1859- 1935

Superb original etching of a harbour scene by Edward William Charlton R.E. 1859-1935. E W Charlton was a seascape and landscape artist made A.R.E in 1892 and full member of the Royal Academy of Painters-Etchers and Engravers in 1907. He exhibited widely including the Royal Academy twenty two times, the R.E one hundred and seventy one times , the London Salon twenty times and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters once. The picture comes with an early mount with the artists name on it and a title ‘Shipping’ It also states ‘etching’. A great image from a well listed artist. Signed by E W Charlton in pencil bottom left.

Original early aquatint titled ‘Capture of the Badere Zaffer, July 1808’ by T Sutherland after an original painting by T Whitcombe. Published in 1816 the picture comes from Jenkin’s Naval Achievements of Great Britain. This work was first published in 1814 and is still regarded as one of the finest monuments to Nelson’s navy ever produced.

Original etching by Gerald Stanley Davies, untitled but I believe it may be ‘The old order changeth giving place to new’ with the location being Portsmouth. Gerald Stanley Davies, 1846-1927, exhibited at both the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. A very nostalgic image signifying the end of the wooden warship era.

Rare artist’s proof etching, 6 of 35, of Dungeness in Kent by the renowned artist Paul Bisson. This large work of the Kent coast is signed in pencil by the artist.

Paul Bisson was born in 1938 in Guernsey and studied at the St Martin’s School of Art for three years (1955-1958) before attending the Royal Academy School. His work is internationally recognised and in many private and corporate collections.

Two by Two, Venice by Wilfred Fairclough

Original signed etching by the listed artist Wilfred Fairclough. The etching is not titled but it came with a hand written note stating that it was called ‘Two by Two’ with the location being Venice.  It is well recorded that he loved and worked in Venice during his long career.

Wilfred Fairclough was born in 1907 and studied at the Royal College of Arts. In 1946 he was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours. He exhibited widely including twelve times at the Royal Academy. His pictures are held in many collections throughout the world. He died in 1996.

The picture has remnants of old tape to the top border, well away from the image and a slight colour change from a previous mount, which will matt out. Otherwise in very good condition. Double click image for a more detailed view.  Size of engraved area 225mm x 175mm.

The picture is untitled but I have checked the location of the image with the National Railway Museum who were extremely helpful in identifying the actual station. Sadly there isn’t a signature but a very atmospheric view probably around 1930.

Nice original etching; purchased as Worthing Pier but not titled. The picture is dated 1924 and signed by F H Wilkinson, not quite sure about the 'F' though. Great image with fishing boats in the foreground and a steamer just leaving the end of the pier.

The picture has a foxing stain just left of the signature and has remnants of old tape on the reverse, well away from the image. Size of engraved area 260mm x 90mm.

Built in Scotland the Cutty Sark was launched in Dunbarton in 1869 and went on to become one of the most famous and fastest of all the tea clippers. Gerald Maurice Burn was a painter and etcher who exhibited widely including five times at the Royal Academy. The picture was copyrighted in the USA in 1925.

The picture is in good condition apart from a slight thinning of the paper along the top of the image, only visible when held up to the light. A rare image. Size of engraved area 250mm x 170mm.

Superb original aquatint titled 'sailors at prayers on board Lord Nelson's ship'. Published and sold in Bond Street, London on the 1st April 1816 by Edward Orme, publisher to his Majesty H.R.H. the Prince Regent. The picture was aquatinted by John Clark and Matthew Dubourg after J.A. Atkinson.

In 1941 he was appointed Principal of Penzance School of Art, retiring in 1965 to concentrate on his etching. He died in 1988. Pencil signed by Hoyton. From the registration markings 'PZ10' I would assume this sailing barge is out of Penzance in Cornwall.

Stunning original limited edition etching numbered 36 of a short run of 75 titled 'The Schooner Bridgett'. The etching is pencil signed, signature appears to be Norman Hickin but cannot be 100% certain. Rare early aquatint '' Moors on board Swiftsure'' engraved by J C Stadler after an original drawing by Cooper Willyams. The picture is dated 1801. H.M.S. Swiftsure was one of the ships under the command of Rear Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. She carried 74 guns and was commanded by Captain Hallowell.
